Drink-with a straw!
Have a glass of water next to
you when you’re feeding. If you
use a straw it makes it much easier to take a sip while your hands are
busy holding the baby!
Expressed milk-keeping cool
When you are keeping expressed
milk in the fridge keep it at the back as this is the coldest part!
Bottle feeding-which one and how?
You may need to
express milk and bottle feed your baby from time to time. However, frequently
a baby that has been Breastfeeding for a while won’t find it easy
to accept a teat. My advice is to find a bottle which best resembles
a nipple. The Tommy Tippee closer to nature range is fantastic. The teat
is nipple shaped and is very soft. If you put a bit of milk over the
teat before you offer it to your baby the smell should encourage your
baby to give feeding a go.
Sore nipples-ouch!
Almost all Breastfeeding mums
will have experienced sore nipples at some time. Try giving the sore
nipple a break by feeding from one side for a couple of feeds (this works
well during the night when you will be feeding less). You can also use
some nipple healing products. The best by far I found was Lansinoh Lanolin;
it coats the raw nerve endings and really works in repairing cracks,
blisters and more. You can get it in a number of places for example Boots.
Which side?
When you begin feeding it can be tricky
to remember which side you need to feed on next. I wore a bracelet which
I could swap to the other wrist to let me know which side to feed on
next. This worked very well when I was out and had lots of other things
to think about!
Keep a record
I have found it really beneficial to
keep a note pad in the nursery to record bits of information about my
baby, for example, what times she fed, numbers of wet and pooey nappies,
when she first smiled etc….
This has come in handy to, for example, look back on to see feeding and
sleep patterns, checking she was getting enough fluid by the number of
wet nappies etc.. My daughter is now almost one and I’m still writing
the odd note, it makes a fabulous read!
